One thing that makes DC unique is that it manages to keep a small city feel despite its size. I love that I often see friends and fellow interns as I work around the city. More than once I have run into tourists multiple times in different parts of the city.

Last Sunday I had another “small town” encounter. On my way back from church I met two guys in a Metro station near Georgetown that graduated from BJU (in 2000 and 2003). I recognized the younger guy from one of my philosophy classes. Both graduates are now in law school and were in DC for a conference.

Unfortunately I didn’t get their names, but I know I could find the more recent grad in a yearbook. I realize that my negligence reflects poorly on my journalistic credibility, but it was a weekend. I thought I was off duty!

On Tuesday of this week, and again on Wednesday, I saw Pastor Keith Weibe in the vicinity of the Russell Building. He was in town to lobby Senator Lobby Byrd (D-WV) regarding the Federal Marriage Amendment. Byrd did end up voting for the amendment.

Yesterday I met Luke Frans, an alumnus of Bob Jones Academy and University, for coffee. Luke was a few years ahead of me in school and has always been very active in politics. He interned in DC every summer while he was in college and upon graduation was hired as a White House staffer. I enjoyed talking with Luke and learning more about his work. He also told me about getting engaged on July 4 in the White House! Exciting stuff.
