In case you don’t get out much, the World Cup has been going on. I’ll confess I’ve not been riveted to the proceedings, but I’m perhaps the only person on this continent of whom that can be said. Since I’m in Europe I decided to join some classmates for tonight’s Germany-Portugal game. (The game times actually work in this time zone.)
Czechs were gathered in front of TVs all around the city to watch the game. We decided to go down to Old Town Square where a big screen was erected for the World Cup. The square is usually a major tourist attraction in Prague. Several impressive churches soar above the square, a massive monument to Jan Hus stands on one side, and a series of old-world edifices define its edges. But tonight it was filled mostly with Czechs, not tourists. Several thousand came out for the game–some sitting, others standing on the cobblestone. Of course, with each goal or near miss a roar went through the crowd.
